Composing music is a process of listening, improvising, dictating, and experimentation. For years, I would begin with a piano in front of me, testing out melodies, harmonies, improvising rhythms and writing them out. This practice of composition relies on Western musical notation; note heads, rhythms, barlines, clefs, and time signatures. Traditional scores utilize numerous parameters to define specific elements of the music, to communicate it to a performer with consistency and clarity.
